Lord Shiva is described in the Vedas and Puranas as the eternal, formless reality who manifests for cosmic balance. Residing on Mount Kailash, he lives as an ascetic yogi, smeared with ashes, yet is also a householder with Goddess Parvati and father to Lord Ganesha and Lord Kartikeya.
He drank the deadly poison Halahala during the Samudra Manthan to save the universe, earning the name Neelkanth. As Nataraja, he performs the cosmic dance of creation and destruction. Shiva is worshipped in the form of the Shiva Lingam, symbolizing infinite energy.
